One London lawyer has made the grade in Shearman & Sterling’s latest partner promotions round, in a cohort of 12.
London lawyer Sam Whitaker has been made a partner in the firm’s compensation, governance and ERISA practice, according to the firm’s statement on its latest cohort on Monday.
Shearman has promoted 12 partners across seven of its offices in total this year, with the majority across its U.S. bases. Three lawyers have been promoted outside the U.S., with one apiece making the cut in Abu Dhabi, London and the UAE. The other two-thirds hail from U.S. bases.
The total amount is a slight dip on last year, when the firm promoted a 14-strong round.
In the statement, senior partner David Beveridge said: “I am pleased to welcome this exceptional group of lawyers to our partnership. These newly elected partners have distinguished themselves through their commitment to excellent client service, their support of the firm’s collective goals and their dedication to developing their teams to best serve the needs of our clients.”
Other firms to have announced partner promotions include Gowling WLG, Womble Bond Dickinson and Travers Smith.
Generally, 2022 partnership cohorts have been larger than in 2021, with several announcing record promotions. Kennedys has announced its largest ever partner promotions round, with 22 joining the partnership compared to the firm’s previous all-time best of 13 partners in 2020, while Ashurst nearly doubled its new partners in 2022 with 25 lawyers up from 14 in 2021.
